Join Interim President Kim Cassidy as she shares news from the campus and the College’s curricular innovations that are preparing today’s students for the world of tomorrow. Learn how these innovations are coming to life as Professor of the History of Art Steven Levine and Curator and Lecturer in History of Art Brian Wallace showcase their course on curating contemporary art—part of Bryn Mawr’s exciting multidisciplinary 360° program.

We will meet as a group at the stairs to The High Line (elevator is available) on 23rd Street and 10th Avenue on Sunday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m. and walk south to Gansevoort Street. We will discuss the High Line’s history as we explore its art installations, plantings and views.

The High Line, a public park built on an elevated freight rail line along Manhattan’s West Side, is owned by the City of New York with a “path” that meanders between West 30th Street and Gansevoort Street. Running through three of Manhattan’s neighborhoods – Hell’s Kitchen/Clinton, West Chelsea and the Meatpacking District – The High Line was built in the 1930’s when these neighborhoods were defined by their industrial and transportation roles. Now these streets are home to galleries, hotels, boutiques and restaurants. We will experience a remarkable urban – and almost pastoral – transformation of a once active then abandoned rail line above the streets of New York.

Constance Rosenblum ’65, a New York Times reporter and former editor of the City section, will discuss her new book, Habitats: Private Lives in the Big City, just published by NYU Press. The book, a collection of expanded versions of her Habitats column, published in The Times, offers 40 vivid and intimate stories about how New Yorkers really live in their brownstones, their apartments, their mansions, and their lofts, and as a whole presents a rich, multi-textured portrait of what it means to make a home in the world’s most varied and powerful city. Items for sale are based on recycling.  There is paper from Cairo’s office trash, embroidered cards and attractive stationery items, and quilts and rugs, potholders and purses made from remnants from the textile mills of Egypt.  Proceeds from the sale of these items, keep the schools open.

Victor Donnay, Professor of Mathematics at Bryn Mawr College, will talk about the department’s longstanding success in supporting and encouraging women to study mathematics, recently recognized by the American Mathematics Society which awarded Bryn Mawr its 2012 Exemplary Mathematics Department Award. He will also discuss his methods of using sustainability to draw students into mathematics and provide them with hands-on opportunities to see how the math they learn in class can connect to issues they care about in the world. Professor Donnay is known as a fascinating teacher

Professor Donnay will be introduced by Laura Gellert ’93, Assistant Professor of Mathematics at The City College of New York School of Education and former Teacher of Mathematics at The Brearley School.

Biography

Victor Donnay is Professor of Mathematics at Bryn Mawr College supported by the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Change Master Fund. He received his Ph.D. from New York University’s Courant Institute with research focusing on chaotic dynamical systems. He has a deep interest in issues of mathematics education and in finding ways to bring the beauty of mathematics to a wider audience. He has been a Primary Investigator on several National Science Foundation funded grants involving K-16 math and science education and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teacher preparation. These grants have had a common theme developing multi-institutional partnerships.
