High Line Walk with Club Board Member Lucille Blair, Sunday, October 20, 10:00 a.m. – Noon (Approximately)

high line

We will meet as a group at the stairs to The High Line (elevator is available) on 23rd Street and 10th Avenue on Sunday, October 20 at 10:00 a.m. and walk south to Gansevoort Street. We will discuss the High Line’s history as we explore its art installations, plantings and views.

The High Line, a public park built on an elevated freight rail line along Manhattan’s West Side, is owned by the City of New York with a “path” that meanders between West 30th Street and Gansevoort Street. Running through three of Manhattan’s neighborhoods – Hell’s Kitchen/Clinton, West Chelsea and the Meatpacking District – The High Line was built in the 1930’s when these neighborhoods were defined by their industrial and transportation roles. Now these streets are home to galleries, hotels, boutiques and restaurants. We will experience a remarkable urban – and almost pastoral – transformation of a once active then abandoned rail line above the streets of New York.

Book Talk: Habitats: Private Lives in the Big City, by Constance Rosenblum ’65, Wednesday, May 22, 7:00 p.m.

Constance Rosenblum ’65, a New York Times reporter and former editor of the City section, will discuss her new book, Habitats: Private Lives in the Big City, just published by NYU Press. The book, a collection of expanded versions of her Habitats column, published in The Times, offers 40 vivid and intimate stories about how New Yorkers really live in their brownstones, their apartments, their mansions, and their lofts, and as a whole presents a rich, multi-textured portrait of what it means to make a home in the world’s most varied and powerful city. This event will appeal to anyone interested in New York, its rich history, and the people who live here.

“The tales of luck or hard work that resulted in the securing of perfect tiny shoebox apartments, rehabbed brownstones, and converted industrial spaces provide a frisson of envy that keeps us reading; it’s the same urge that has us gaze up at lighted windows from the sidewalk below and wonder if someone else’s house, and thus, their very existence, is better than our own. Rosenblum’s profiles are a celebration of New York.” – Publishers Weekly

Books will be available for sale and for signing by the author, and refreshments will be served.

Description of the exhibition (currently on view in London) by the Financial Times:
“If the National Portrait Gallery’s tremendous Lucian Freud exhibition is the public statement of the late artist’s historical significance, this museum-standard, nonselling display of drawings and etchings installed in a Georgian interior in Mayfair offers the private, intimate angle [proceeding to New York in May], it is superbly curated – and was planned closely with Freud &’ by his biographer William Feaver, and includes outstanding work from every period.”

Discovering the Altai Region: A Conversation with Jennifer Castner, ’93, Thursday, March 15, 2012

Jennifer Castner, ’93, Director of The Altai Project, and Mikhail Paltsyn, Program Coordinator for WWF-Altai-Sayan, introduced us to a remote area of Russia and the beautiful snow leopards living there. Jennifer and Mikhail are part of a collaborative effort to study and protect the northernmost population of snow leopards in the world. Although there are an estimated 4500 snow leopards worldwide, there are only about 100 of these elusive and beautiful cats in Russia. Poaching (both subsistence and commercial) is the single biggest threat to snow leopards, closely followed by habitat loss. Russian plans to build an international gas pipeline and develop copper and cobalt deposits in the heart of snow leopard country also loom on the near horizon.

The Altai Project’s mission is to protect the natural and cultural heritage of Altai—a uniquely diverse, mountainous region of southern Siberia. The goals of The Altai Project are nature conservation, promoting renewable energy and sustainable design, and supporting indigenous organizations in their efforts to restore and protect their traditional lands and lifeways. Its past successes include leadership of an international campaign to stop the Altai gas pipeline project, over a decade of grant-making for Altai grassroots conservation, reduced poaching and strengthened protected areas, and timely strategic support that has resulted in Altai being on the leading edge of renewable energy development and the green building movement in Russia. The Altai Project is a project of Earth Island Institute, a network consisting of more than 50 projects worldwide. Visit the Project’s website for more information and many fascinating photographs: http://altaiproject.org.
