Please join the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City for a special evening at HERE and Basil Twist’s SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE. The performance is Followed by a Backstage Tour and Special Reception with food, wine, and conversation in HERE’s Lounge with Club board members and HERE board member Bethany Haynes ’98.
About the Show
Twenty years ago in 1998, Basil Twist debuted his boundary-breaking response to Berlioz’s 1830 “Symphonie Fantastique” to universal acclaim, inaugurating HERE’s intimate Dorothy B. Williams Theatre and Dream Music Puppetry Program. In the two decades since Symphonie Fantastique’s premiere, Basil Twist has become an internationally recognized artist in opera, ballet, and on Broadway, and has won countless awards including the illustrious MacArthur Fellowship. Twist will revisit his legendary masterpiece as part of HERE’s 25th Anniversary Season- upon its 20th Anniversary. In this revival, accompanied live by a virtuosic pianist Christopher O’Riley playing the exquisite Liszt transcription, Symphonie floats and swirls in a 1,000-gallon water stage. For the many who never saw it, and for those who relish seeing it again and again, the return of this tour de force to HERE is the event of the season.
“I found myself slipping into a fugue of irrational, unadulterated joy…. Anyone seeking pure, thought-exorcising escapism — the kind provided by acid trips and dreams of flying — need only plunge into the churning waves of Symphonie Fantastique.”
— BEN BRANTLEY, THE NEW YORK TIMES
Home to New York City’s most imaginative live performance experiences, HERE produces work that is affordable, challenging and alternative. We give audiences the chance to be part of something new and fresh. Our artists work across disciplines, disrupting conventional expectations as they cast new molds of collaborative works. This eclecticism makes HERE undefinable at its core, and entirely unforgettable. HERE is proud to have Bryn Mawr alum Bethany Haynes lead our efforts as our esteemed Board Chair.
