Get ready for Crafts of Cairo sale, where you can purchase beautiful and reasonably priced gifts for your loved ones made by artisans at the Association for the Protection of the Environment, a job-skills training program for women living and working in the zabbaleen (garbage recyclers) community in Cairo. The dazzling array of goods—including rugs, jewelry, quilts, tote bags, potholders, stuffed toys, pillows, holiday decorations, and stationery—is all handmade from cleaned and recycled materials. Proceeds from your purchases will go toward the funding of a school in Mokattam, an area above Cairo’s Citadel, which teaches women and girls from the zabbaleen community reading, writing, arithmetic, and marketable skills such as weaving, sewing, recycling, and embroidery. The school helps the community take a step out of poverty.
Shoppers are invited to gather at Anassa Taverna on Sunday, December 15, for some post-shopping refreshment. Meet the club president, Alisha Park, at the sale at noon. She will lead a group to the restaurant at 2:30 p.m. from the church entrance.
