Join the Bryn Mawr Club of New York City for a performance of Our Town on Broadway, followed by an optional post-theater dinner at the Italian restaurant Becco. We have a limited supply of orchestra seats (rows P and Q) for Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize–winning play, directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon and starring Emmy Award winner Jim Parsons. This timeless new production sports a modern, diverse cast that includes Richard Thomas, Katie Holmes, and Michelle Wilson. In Wilder’s universal tale of a small town, a stage manager narrates the daily lives of its locals, depicts a childhood friendship that turns into a marriage, and sets the stage for the magnificent truths of what it means to be alive.
Jesse Green of the New York Times hails the production as “an Our Town for all of us” and praises Parsons for “his light touch and cynical sang-froid.” Green writes that the play is both “brutal and avant-garde after 86 years,” highlighting the multicultural cast as well as the production design. Aramide Tinubu writes in Variety that the production “captures the most magnificent part of the human experience—life itself. Its outstanding performances and minimalistic set design by Beowulf Boritt highlight the brevity and magic of being alive.”
Director Kenny Leon said, “I grew up thinking it wasn’t a play for me, but later in life I thought, ‘If you just include more people, it’s a play about our time and our planet and each other.’”
Attendees are welcome to come along for dinner afterward at Becco, where we will be joined by one of the producers, Gabby Palitz, for a drink and post-show discussion (reservation with organizer required).
