Note new location: Guided walking tour of Central Park’s North Woods with Catherine Fredman ’80 (Saturday, June 8, 9:30 a.m.)

It has come to our attention that there will be a 10K race in Central Park on June 8 that will disrupt our planned itinerary. We have made the decision to move the walk to the North Woods. The date and time will remain the same, but our new meeting location will be the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, on the north shore of the Harlem Meer, inside the park at 110th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard. (Take the B or C train to Cathedral Parkway/110th Street or the 2 or 3 train to Central Park North/110th Street.) Thank you for understanding, and we hope you enjoy the tour of the North Woods.

Central Park’s North Woods is one of the best-kept secrets of the park. The forty-acre woodland epitomizes the desire of landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux to bring the healing powers of nature into a concrete jungle. This ninety-minute custom tour, given by an experienced Central Park Conservancy guide, will showcase the ongoing restoration of an area that once was synonymous with urban blight. We’ll see the reimagining of a playground and public pool, then follow a winding stream through the woods past three waterfalls to one of the loveliest bodies of water in the park.

The tour will begin at the Charles A. Dana Discovery Center, on the north shore of the Harlem Meer, inside the park at 110th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard. (Take the B or C train to Cathedral Parkway/110th Street or the 2 or 3 train to Central Park North/110th Street.) The tour will end at 100th Street and Central Park West. There are some steps and steep paths.

Catherine Fredman ’80 is a ghostwriter who has collaborated on six bestselling leadership strategy books and memoirs. She was a volunteer tour guide with the Central Park Conservancy for twelve years. Despite living in New York for most of her life, she still finds new things to discover and delight in in the park.
